Presentation Title: ‘Importance of reliable estimation of mineral resources in the development of a mining project’

Abstract: Development of a mineral deposit takes years of activities including drilling, sampling and assessment of mineral resources. As the deposit moves from preliminary exploration to construction into a mining project, through various sub-stages, as each stage a review of mineral resources is done to ensure that the mine that is to be developed can generate enough revenue to make the project profitable. We all know that the entire project is based on a predicted model of mineral resource that has the potential to generate revenue for the project. Therefor the estimation of mineral resources need to be reliable and defendable. In this talk some real life examples will be used (without disclosing deposit details) to demonstrate the importance of reliable estimation of mineral resources in evaluation of a mineral deposit for further development.

  11. Bruce Thorne gave a helpful, engaging and informative talk at our January meeting, full of personal experiences and insights. His topic – Prospecting – got everyone involved. There was something for the expert as well as the neophyte.

Our January meetings are sparsely attended as a rule. In January many of our members are getting ready to go to Tucson, apathetic because of the gloomy weather, and still exhausted from the Christmas season. We only had a dozen or so there, but everyone got involved, quipped and asked serious questions.

Bruce brought a record number of specimens to show and discuss, including a 65 pound kyanite-schorl beauty from the Cargo Muchacho Mountains in Southern California.

If you were elsewhere you missed an excellent meeting.

For those who are going to Tucson, Take pictures of what you see there that would interest our stay-at-homes, and be prepared to talk about them at our February meeting!

  15. Our gratitude to Blake and Cathy Mellor for opening their gracious home and grounds to us for the first MCU BBQ in a very long time! They had set up their backyard, a shaded green oasis, with everything for an elegant picnic: tables, chairs, tablecloths, and decorative place settings. It was a treat to see Blake’s beautifully displayed collection, acquired over 50 years. And thanks to everyone who brought potluck side dishes. The event was a great success.

  16. MCU Potluck Dinner
Wednesday, August 27 starting at 6:30 pm at the home of Blake Mellor. Please bring your favorite side-dish, salad, or dessert and joins us for the BBQ.

Directions: From I-15 exit at 7200 south head east to State Street. Turn left on State Street heading north almost four blocks. There will be an Astro Burger on your right. Turn right there, the street is 6850 South. The first right you can turn on is 90 East. Turn right there. My house number is 6908 and is on the right side of the street. It’s the one with the flowers that come down to the sidewalk.

      1. I heard a rumor that the MCU president (if not impeached yet) may even make an appearance…
